Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Academy

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy provides a broad range of cultural and academic learning experiences that are designed to bring together individuals as well as groups of students from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, social class, and religious backgrounds for meaningful interactions and to provide a broad base of learning experiences, curricular, co-curricular, research, service, independent, creative, artistic, and study abroad to reach the unique potential of each student participant. The Academy strives to enhance the educational experience of the participants by creating a challenging, diverse, and friendly learning environment that leads to greater student engagement and success.

GEAR UP/College Day (GUCD) Program

The GEAR UP/College Day Program's mission is to provide an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to discover first hand, the potential of a college education and to expose students to the information, knowledge and skills they need to complete high school and prepare them adequately for college entry and success. The GEAR UP/College Day Program partners with Michigan's 15 Public Higher Education Institutions, Michigan Department of Treasury and Partnership for Learning to target and provide services to 38 Public Secondary School districts and 77 school buildings throughout Michigan. The goal is to improve the entry into post secondary education of students from the targeted areas.

The grant is funded by three sources: Federal Department of Education, Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, and Western Michigan University.

Steps Toward Exhibiting Mastery (STEM) Program

The STEM Program is designed to promote student success and to increase college graduation rates for academically and economically disadvantaged students. Eligible students are provided academic support through tutoring, mentoring, counseling/advising, multicultural activities, educational seminars, career and graduate school planning, and other resources designed to enhance their education and college experience, as well as to enable them to achieve a postsecondary degree.

Funding for this program is provided by the State of Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth - King/Chávez/Parks Initiative.

Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society

Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society is a member of the National Association of College Honor Societies. Mu Omicron was initiated at WMU in 1989, and it is the only chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu in the State of Michigan. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society is to promote high scholarship, to encourage sincere and zealous endeavors in all fields of knowledge and service, and to develop an appreciation for scholarly work and the scholarly endeavors in others. Alpha Kappa Mu's activities include sponsoring scholarly speakers, participating in the National Undergraduate Research Conference, and attending regional and national conferences and conventions.
